ARTISTS STATEMENT
For as long as I remember, pastels have been my media of choice. My most frequent subject matter is the landscape, but I dont limit myself to any specific genre. Any scene or object that offers great colors, contrast or mystery can find itself the focal point of one of my paintings.
I feel that my role as an artist is to bring attention to the environment around me by conveying the sense of excitement and energy that I feel while creating the work. Pastel is an excellent medium for doing just that. There is no feeling so gratifying as putting marks on paper and mixing and blending by hand. I feel a measure of success when the viewer begins to feel an emotional response to my vision.
My love of books and the written word has become the catalyst for my latest series of pastels incorporating mixed media. Small pastel sketches, drawings, and skins are layered with whatever media provides the most surface contrast. This draws the viewer in and provides him with a visual enigma; one that he has to examine more closely to perceive and enjoy.
I feel that this series offers endless opportunities for experimentation and discovery that will keep my creative journey fresh and exciting.
